Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day — that’s September 16th. Instead, it commemorates the Mexican army’s surprising victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

The holiday is actually celebrated more widely in the United States than in Mexico, where it’s primarily observed in Puebla. Here, it’s evolved into a significant celebration of Mexican-American culture — and in communities like ours with strong Hispanic populations, it’s genuinely meaningful.
